European Indoor Athletics Championship 2019

6 March 2019

It's not just about the winning in's about about everything else in between

Another day and another trip to Glasgow, or at least that’s how it felt as I hit the road once again towards the Scottish capital for yet another major sporting event. Not that I was complaining! I love trips to Glasgow – it feels like it’s very much becoming the sporting capital of the UK with European and even world championships visiting on a relatively regular basis now. This time I was heading up to cover the European Indoor Athletics Championship.

And why wouldn’t they be visiting? It’s a lovely city that has such an interesting history. When I previously visited for the European Championship (only 7 months ago!) I loved exploring all the venues that this city had to offer.

A new venue for me to photograph in was the Emirates Arena – I hadn’t had the chance to make it to the sport events that were held in the arena last year so it was nice to explore a new environment and see what cool photographs could be made.

Indoor athletics, as it turns out, can be quite difficult to take images of…with very limited shooting positions for most photographers it meant you had to really stretch your creativity to come up with interesting angles of each sport. Sometimes it meant stepping away from the sport itself for a minute or two. There’s always hundreds of different stories taking place at an event like the European Indoor Athletics Championship.

Whether that’s a group of Swedish fans that have travelled all the way to Glasgow to support their favourite athlete, a child raising a foam finger as their hero powers through to win a 60 metre gold medal or even the moment where an athlete on the brink of a medal falls at the final hurdle. This is what sport is all about in our opinion and it’s what we always look for. There’s more to sport than just the activity itself.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time photographing the European Indoor Athletics Championships at the Emirates Arena – witnessing some amazing athletes and brilliant sporting memories.
