Nothing beats the smell of rally car in a damp forest. That slight whiff of hot exhaust coated in mud helps to bring in a unique atmosphere in the forests of Wales. This was my second time exploring the forests and beautiful scenery of Wales, it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Although Sebastien Ogier had wrapped up the championship back in Spain it did mean that all three Volkswagen drivers were unleashed for Wales – and you could tell. The story that had everyone paying attention across the whole weekend was the retirement of long time FIA World Rally Championship competitor Mikko Hirvonen. After 13 years, 15 victories, 4 runner up spots in the world championship and countless stage wins Mikko decided to call it day on the WRC. It was certainly emotional times for all involved. Hopefully we’ll see him out somewhere in the coming years.
